National Legislation Aims to Resolve Thimerosal Controversy - Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney introduced the “Comprehensive Comparative Study of Vaccinated and Unvaccinated Populations Act of 2007” (H.R. 2832), legislation that would require the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to conduct a comprehensive comparative study of vaccinated and unvaccinated populations, which may resolve the controversy about the possible link between autism and mercury or other vaccine components [details here].

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) website has a section on immunization laws in the United States. One section of interest is A matter of law: Parents must be informed. Quoting from this section: “By law, parents, guardians, or patients must be given information in writing about the risks and benefits of vaccination before a vaccine is administered.” The section then references “Vaccines and Immunizations” on the website of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Of particular interest is the section on “Vaccine Safety and Adverse Events.” Forms are provided for reporting a vaccine adverse event, either on-line or on a paper form.
