Paperboy : Confessions of a Future Engineer
by Henry Petroski
Hardcover: 384
pages
Paperboy is a memoir of growing up in Cambria Heights in the fifties. Young Henry attended Sacred Heart grammar school and Holy Cross
H.S., but I think his experience was not greatly different from what one would have had in St. Pascals in that
era. As an ex-pressboy I can vouch for his account of hanging out at the press office and delivering the paper seven days a week. I only regret his bad mouthing my other Alma Mater, Andrew Jackson H.S., but must admit others (mostly
nuns) held the same opinion in my time. Henry also seemed to have a snobbish attitude toward St. Albans and crossing Springfield
Blvd, but I did appreciate his Q4 bus joke, which I had never heard before. Altogether the book is a good read and a reminder for me
of many happy days. This is the first book report I have had to write in over fifty years so I would hope for an A for effort or at least one for neatness.

Lily's
Crossing, by Patricia Reilly Giff
Anticipating the 1944 summer vacation from St. Pascal Baylon School, 10-year-old Lily
Mollahan grows increasingly irritated with the war overseas and its threat closer to home:
"Was that all anyone thought about--news and the war?"Staying with her
grandmother in Rockaway while her father heads for France and the fighting, Lily becomes
increasingly intrigued by another child, a Hungarian refugee. "Albert could really be
a Nazi spy," she fantasizes. Imagination is one thing, lying another, and as her
vacation draws on, the young heroine's tales become more dangerous than charming. Patricia
Reilly Giff carefully evokes wartime tensions and summertime torpor. She has also created
a complicated, intriguing little girl. (Ages 8 to very old)
Note: In this Newbery Honor Book author Giff tips her hat to Sr. Devota. |
