The New High School's First Occupants
by Betty Christy (formerly known as Elizabeth Signorelli)
My husband, Jim, and I were in the first graduating class of St. Pascal's HS and we
were the first editors of the yearbook. Our class was the first to go through --
the first Freshmen, the first Sophomores, the first Juniors and the first Seniors.
We must have been brats all the way through -- never having anyone above us.
On the first day of school in September, 1956, we attended Mass at the church and were
escorted by four nuns to the High School. We went up a ramp since the set of steps in the
foyer were not in yet, and went to our assigned classrooms -- at which time, we were told
that we were to go home for another week since everything was not complete. When we
returned, the only things completed were the four classrooms and the principal's office.
The library, home economics (I don't ever remember that being opened), the lunchroom and
the gym were non-existent. We had all our classes, our lunch and NO GYM in our classrooms.
Gradually, the other rooms opened up. Since we were only 110 strong, we didn't require
much space.
In the year 2000 it will be 40 years since we graduated. Hard to believe. I think we
got a great education there and our class certainly bonded. What choice did we have? I
also attended St. Pascal elementary school -- another great experience.
Betty's brother, Peter (6/54), and her sister, Marjorie ('59) graduated from St.
Pascal's. Peter went on to Brooklyn Tech and Peggy went to St. Pascal Baylon HS. |
